Hennessey Blackbirds sell out in hours

The 71 build slots for Hennessey’s new Blackbird hypercar sold out in four hours, the company confirmed this week. All were gone by the end of its public debut at The Quail during Monterey Car Week on August 19.

Pricing starts at $2.5 million before taxes. The Blackbird is Hennessey’s third hypercar, following the Venom GT in 2010 and the Venom F5 in 2021. It uses a naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V8 instead of forced induction.

Most buyers reserved before the unveiling

Over 60 of the 71 slots were claimed before the car was shown. The rest disappeared within hours. A waitlist is forming, though the automaker hasn’t announced plans to expand production beyond the initial run.

Deliveries won’t begin until 2029 at the earliest, after the current Venom F5 production finishes. Those joining the waitlist now are committing to a car they won’t drive for years.

The Blackbird’s manual-only transmission reflects a shift at the company. Hennessey introduced a six-speed manual in the Venom F5-M earlier this year, later making it available across the entire F5 lineup. The new model removes the option entirely—no automatics, no hybrids.

For some collectors, a hypercar without screens or electrification is the appeal. The Blackbird’s interior skips touchscreens, a choice inspired by the SR-71 spy plane it’s named after. This contrasts with rivals like the Czinger 21C Spyder, which uses hybrid tech and digital interfaces.

The engine, developed with Ilmor Engineering, produces 800 to 850 horsepower and revs past 9,000 rpm. Power reaches the rear wheels through a six-speed manual transmission. Performance figures include a 0-60 mph time of 2.5 seconds and a top speed of 220 mph.

The car features a carbon-fiber tub, full carbon body panels, and adaptive suspension. Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires come standard, with a target weight under 3,000 pounds. Inside, analog gauges and physical controls replace modern infotainment systems.

John Hennessey called the response “overwhelmingly positive.” He said buyers are “tired of overly complex, hybridized cars filled with screens, and lacking emotion.” This stance challenges the trend among hypercar makers favoring electrification and digital features.

Not all internal-combustion hypercars follow that trend. The Koenigsegg One:1 uses a high-output twin-turbo V8 without hybrid assistance but still includes modern tech. The Blackbird avoids this entirely.

The rapid sellout shows demand exists for cars prioritizing driving experience over digital integration. For buyers who value scarcity and mechanical purity, the appeal goes beyond speed. It represents a return to a more tactile way of driving—even if it means waiting until the end of the decade to take delivery.

Hennessey hasn’t indicated whether more Blackbirds will be built. For now, the 71 sold this week are the only ones planned.

Running a successful garage sale requires similar attention to detail—knowing what buyers want and delivering it efficiently.
