India’s EV Sales Cross 15 Lakh Units in First Nine

Electric two-wheeler registrations in India crossed 15.61 lakh units between January and September 2026, a 62 percent increase over the same period last year, according to Vahan data. Four manufacturers, TVS, Bajaj, Ather, and Hero, accounted for 76 percent of these registrations, firmly establishing a dominant position in the segment.
The January to September 2025 total stood at 9.61 lakh units, meaning registrations have increased by about 6 lakh units over the corresponding period. This volume jump represents a year-on-year rise of around 62 per cent, a significant acceleration in adoption. The 2026 tally so far has also surpassed the total volume recorded across the entire 2025 calendar year. While the full-year total for 2025 stood at 13.42 lakh units, the January-to-September figure in 2026 is already 2.19 lakh units higher.
Market Leaders and New Challengers
TVS and Bajaj contributed close to half of the month’s electric two wheeler registrations as the iQube, Orbiter and Chetak are delivering incremental volumes. These two established manufacturers sit at the centre of the latest monthly sales data, supported by strong consumer interest in their models. Ather and Hero added further scale to the leading group, with the Rizta and VX series garnering more attention. The market share places the top four OEMs in a position of control, as they account for more than three quarters of the entire segment.
Smaller EV manufacturers have also increased their share during the year. River Mobility moved from 1.27 per cent in 2025 to 2.46 per cent during January to September 2026, while Ultraviolette and Oben Electric recorded similar gains. Ola Electric, meanwhile, operates in a very different competitive environment from the one seen earlier in the electric two wheeler cycle as its volumes have fallen.
Funding rounds have become a defining feature of the sector’s recent activity. Companies including Ola Electric, Ather Energy, River Mobility, Simple Energy, Bounce, Oben Electric, Ultraviolette, and Matter have announced capital plans focused on expanding production and distribution networks for upcoming products.
