Nissan’s third‑generation e‑Power hybrid system earned a Guinness World Record after a Qashqai e‑Power completed a 1,980 km journey on a single tank of fuel, the longest distance logged by a non‑plug‑in extended‑range electric SUV without external charging.

Record attempt spanned Colombia’s varied terrain

The drive took place from July 14 to July 17, covering a route that began in Bogotá and ended on the Caribbean coast. Official judges monitored each segment, confirming that the vehicle tackled a mix of road types, traffic conditions and elevations.

Richard Candler, the executive overseeing family, product and components strategy, said the achievement “shows the capability of the latest generation of e‑Power technology.” He added that the system “delivers efficiency, refinement and EV‑like driving performance” aimed at real‑world customer needs.

The powertrain relies on a 1.5‑litre turbocharged inline‑three gasoline engine. The automaker applied its StarC production concept to improve combustion stability when the engine operates lean at a fixed rev range for electricity generation, achieving a thermal efficiency of 42 %.

Compared with earlier models that used VC‑Turbo variable compression, the new setup employs a larger, simpler turbocharger and 0W‑16 oil to cut internal friction. The engine no longer drives the wheels; it functions solely as a generator for the battery.

Battery and drivetrain integration boost range

The battery retains a 2.1 kWh capacity but now powers a more integrated electric drive unit. This modular component combines the traction motor, generator, inverter, reducer and increaser, resulting in a modest power increase and better overall efficiency.

Under the WLTP testing protocol, the Qashqai e‑Power is officially rated for up to 1,200 km of range. The record‑setting trip suggests that careful driving—light pedal input, strategic route planning and disciplined operation—can push the SUV well beyond that figure.
