Eagle-Eyed Salesman Calls Progressive After Mercedes Purchase

A Houston car salesman, @bigbodybenz_91, shared a TikTok video detailing how he helped catch a potential fraudster using a Credit Privacy Number (CPN) to buy a vehicle. A Credit Privacy Number (CPN) is a nine-digit number that scammers portray as a “replacement” Social Security Number (SSN). In some cases, these CPNs are real SSNs that scammers stole from another person. Either way, it is illegal to use a CPN in lieu of your SSN on financial paperwork. The incident highlights an ongoing issue that federal authorities have long warned against.

The video, shot at a local dealership, shows the team identifying suspicious paperwork and coordinating with police to apprehend the would-be buyer before they could leave with the car.

What Happened at the Dealership

The sales team noticed issues with the customer’s documentation in the finance department. Instead of turning him away immediately, they kept him engaged, leading him to believe the sale was proceeding as planned. “He was excited, thinking he’d gotten away with it,” @bigbodybenz_91 said in the video.

The customer was then led to the vehicle, where he was asked to complete a pre-delivery inspection and install the connected services app on his phone. Although initially resistant, he complied. “I shook his hand, congratulating him on his new car,” the salesman recounted. As soon as the dealership gates lifted, seven Houston police officers arrived, and the man attempted to flee but was quickly apprehended. Authorities later found a bag containing multiple ID cards and fraudulent materials.

Understanding CPN Fraud in Car Purchases

Scammers sometimes use CPNs to obscure their actual financial history, especially when seeking car financing with poor credit. The Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis warns that using such numbers is a crime, including identity theft and making false statements on loan applications.

These numbers often surface during car financing situations. Legitimate credit repair involves rebuilding credit through on-time payments and reducing credit card balances, which typically takes years. Anyone promising quick fixes, especially with upfront payments or lack of government affiliation, should be approached with caution.

Viewers commenting on the video held differing opinions on the dealership’s actions. One person asked, “Are you car salesmen or car police?” Another wondered, “Why not just deny him instead?”

However, others defended the dealership. One commenter responded, “Until it’s your identity being stolen… then you’ll understand why they did what they did.” The warning to potential fraudsters was direct: “If you’re trying to use a CPN to buy a car, dealerships will make you believe the sale is done. Stop trying to use CPNs; fix your actual credit and come back.”
