Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Overhauled with New Engines, Features - silverado engine upgrades
The 2027 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 introduces four new engine options, including a 6.6L V8 with 481 hp.

Chevrolet’s 2027 Silverado 1500 debuts with a redesigned exterior, revamped interior, and new powertrain options, marking a significant overhaul comparable to the 1988 GMT400 transition.

The truck features four engine choices, including the Turbomax (350 hp, 455 lb-ft), Duramax diesel (305 hp, 495 lb-ft), and two new V8s: a 5.7L (402 hp, 428 lb-ft) and a 6.6L (481 hp, 501 lb-ft). All engines pair with a 10-speed automatic transmission.

Performance and Towing

The 6.6L V8, currently exclusive to High Country and ZR2 trims, delivers robust power, while the 5.7L V8 offers impressive performance and a distinctive exhaust note. The 10-speed transmission operates smoothly across all tested models.

Towing capacities vary: the 5.7L V8 can haul up to 13,700 pounds, the Duramax manages 12,000 pounds, and the four-cylinder Turbomax is rated for 9,400 pounds. The 6.6L V8, despite its power, is limited to 9,700 pounds due to GVWR calculations.

The Silverado’s suspension refinements enhance ride comfort, particularly on light-duty models, making it more suitable for daily use. The truck’s turning radius allows for tight U-turns in urban settings, a notable improvement for its class.

Interior Enhancements and Practical Features

The 2027 Silverado introduces several practical improvements. A redesigned tailgate mechanism now allows the main tailgate to lower with a two-second button press, eliminating previous operational constraints. The buttons are also tactile, enabling use by feel. Additionally, the flip-out center armrest, inspired by Ford’s design, is paired with a column shifter for better functionality. However, the volume dial’s placement near the driver has led to occasional confusion with the start button.

Standard features include a front bench seat, available in colors like Trillium Green and Apex Red. Accessory switches, priced at $1,195, support future upgrades such as auxiliary lights or a winch. A fully equipped model with a 402-hp V8 engine, off-road capabilities, and an 8,300-pound towing capacity reaches $75,345. For traditionalists, a regular cab short box starts at $56,525, with an 8-foot box option for an additional $300.

Technology and Interior

The infotainment system integrates over a dozen cameras, providing enhanced visibility for towing. A new trailer brake controller automatically adjusts brake gain, improving towing safety and ease of use.

The MultiFlex tailgate has been redesigned for better functionality, addressing previous usability issues. The interior features a 16.3-inch touchscreen with Google built-in services and a 12.2-inch driver display, offering rapid response times and intuitive controls.

Chevrolet has standardized the interior design across all trims, eliminating the two-tier approach of previous models. Even base models now include premium materials and advanced technology, enhancing overall value.

The High Country trim has been repositioned to compete with Ram’s Tungsten, featuring Alcantara upholstery, massaging seats, and supple leather throughout the cabin.

Off-road capabilities are highlighted in the Trail Boss and ZR2 trims, equipped with 34-inch and 35-inch tires, respectively. The ZR2 includes front and rear lockers, Trail mode, and Multimatic DSSV dampers for enhanced off-road performance.

Pricing for the 2027 Silverado starts at $56,525 for a regular cab short box and climbs to $101,499 for the ZR2. The Custom Trail Boss, priced around $75,000 when equipped with the 5.7L V8, stands out as a value option with its combination of off-road features and towing capacity.

Fuel Efficiency and Design

The Duramax diesel engine stands out for its fuel efficiency, achieving 7.0 L/100 km on highways and impressive urban performance. GM positions it as a hybrid alternative, though this claim remains debatable.

The new 128-litre fuel tank extends the truck’s range significantly. Official fuel economy figures for the 5.7L and 6.6L engines are 12.8 L/100 km (highway) and 16.1 L/100 km (city), and 13.0 L/100 km (highway) and 17.4 L/100 km (city), respectively.

The exterior design incorporates aerodynamic features, including a rear cab spoiler that enhances airflow, integrates box lighting, and houses a 1,000 mm-wide LED high-mount stop lamp.

Interior and Trim Options

The infotainment layout prioritizes frequently used functions, with drag-and-drop and press-and-hold options for customization. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included, enhancing user familiarity.

It combines off-road features like skid plates and a two-inch lift kit with a towing capacity of 8,300 pounds.
