Toyota aims for better fuel economy - fuel economy
The new hybrid system is centered around a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine designed specifically for electrified duty.

Toyota has detailed its next-generation hybrid powertrain technology, which will power the upcoming 13th-generation Corolla. The Corolla is expected to arrive for the 2028 model year and will feature a downsized setup with aerodynamic drag reduction.

The new hybrid system is centered around a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine designed specifically for electrified duty. This engine will be produced in two configurations: a naturally aspirated 1.5-liter and a turbocharged 1.5-liter for higher-output applications.

The internal-combustion engines are paired with redesigned electric transaxles and drive units, which integrate the electric drive motor, power control unit, and inverter into a unified assembly. This reduces the physical mass and exterior dimensions of the electrical hardware compared to current-generation systems.

Toyota’s primary objective in shrinking the engine block and transaxle footprint was packaging flexibility. A physically shorter engine allows designers to lower the front hood line, reducing frontal surface area and improving aerodynamic drag. This benefits both hybrid and fully electric variants of the Corolla.

The compact dimensions of the new hybrid system also enable Toyota to utilize a single underlying platform across traditional hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and pure electric models. This manufacturing flexibility allows assembly plants to adjust production ratios between hybrids and electric vehicles based on shifting market demand.

Toyota is targeting more than a 15 percent improvement in fuel economy over the current hybrid generation. Engineers attribute the projected gains to four core engineering improvements: lower mechanical friction, improved thermal efficiency, reduced electrical losses, and aerodynamic drag reduction.

Recent graphics released by Toyota suggest the production model will borrow cues from the low-slung Corolla design concept revealed at the Tokyo auto show. The 13th-generation Corolla could potentially drop its traditional gas-only powertrain entirely in favor of an all-electrified lineup.
