Koenigsegg Jesko smashes quarter-mile speed record

The Koenigsegg Jesko Absolut, a 1,600-horsepower hypercar, set a new production car record for the quarter-mile after an over-the-air software update. It now completes the distance in 8.54 seconds at 190 mph, surpassing its earlier performance.

The half-mile time is also notable: 12.76 seconds at 232 mph. These results are the fastest for any non-electric production car. Acceleration from zero to 60 mph takes 2.26 seconds, while reaching 200 mph requires just 9.38 seconds.

The car’s rear-wheel-drive layout and unprepped surface at Koenigsegg’s test track in Ängelholm, Sweden, make the achievement more impressive. Unlike many competitors, it uses only internal combustion, with no hybrid or electric assistance.

The improvements stemmed from adjustments to traction control, shifting, and launch control. All Jesko Absolut owners will receive the update remotely. Factory test driver Markus Lundh handled the record run while holding his phone, a detail that stood out given the speeds involved.

Designed for minimal drag, the Jesko Absolut replaces the Jesko Attack’s rear wing with two shark fins. Other changes include streamlined front splitter winglets, revised front louvers, a longer rear end, and wheel covers to reduce air resistance.

A twin-turbocharged 5.0-liter V8 powers the car, delivering 1,600 horsepower on E85 fuel. The engine revs to 8,500 rpm and features a lightweight crankshaft weighing 27.5 pounds. A nine-speed transmission routes power to the wheels, and the vehicle weighs 3,064 pounds.

Christian von Koenigsegg suggested further advancements are coming. In a video, he mentioned the Gemera, a 2,300-horsepower grand tourer with a hybrid powertrain and a top speed of 249 mph. “We still see room for improvement,” he stated. “This is just the beginning.”

Video footage of the record run was released, though technical details about the software changes remained limited. The results speak for themselves.

The Jesko Absolut had previously set a 0-250-0 mph record in 2022, finishing the cycle in 28.27 seconds. Its design favors straight-line speed over downforce, a choice that continues to yield strong acceleration results.

Other hypercars are also breaking records. The Bugatti Chiron Super Sport holds the production car top speed record at 304 mph, though its quarter-mile times are less aggressive. The Rimac Nevera, an all-electric model, holds the EV quarter-mile record at 8.58 seconds—just 0.04 seconds behind the Jesko Absolut’s new mark.

Koenigsegg’s strategy remains unique. The brand emphasizes lightweight engineering and software refinements rather than hybrid or fully electric powertrains. For now, the Jesko Absolut holds the quarter-mile record among production cars.
