Volkswagen debuts most powerful GTI badge on ID.3

Volkswagen has unveiled the most powerful GTI in its history, applying the badge to its all-electric ID.3. The new model delivers 321 horsepower, pushing it ahead of the combustion-powered Golf GTI Edition 50 as the most potent version of the badge ever produced.

Power and handling

The ID.3 GTI is a rear-wheel-drive vehicle that generates 403 pound-feet of torque. Volkswagen engineers developed new software to manage this power, allowing the motor to mimic the inertia of a gasoline engine and prevent rapid spin-up during traction loss when the electronic stability control is turned off.

This system, according to the automaker, makes the car feel less aggressive than some high-performance electric vehicles. The car accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in 5.6 seconds and reaches a top speed of 124 mph. While this places it behind the similarly powerful Golf GTI Edition 50, Volkswagen believes the ID.3 GTI offers a more composed driving experience.

The chassis uses a variant of the adaptive DCC sports system found in combustion GTI models. A dedicated GTI mode sharpens the car’s response. Despite the focus on performance, the car includes a simulated engine sound pumped into the cabin, a feature absent from competitors like the Porsche Taycan and Honda Civic Type R.

Design and interior

Visually, the car relies on subtle updates rather than major changes. It is available in Tornado red and features red accents throughout the cabin. The interior includes a tartan-like upholstery on the seats and a specific GTI button on the steering wheel.

The dashboard retains the same 10.9-inch digital cluster and 12.9-inch central screen found in the standard car, but the GTI model adds unique performance displays. An optional retro skin references the design of the original mk1 Golf dashboard. Buyers will also benefit from the tactile controls introduced on the standard ID.3 Neo.

On the exterior, the car gains new 20-inch ‘Worthersee’ diamond-cut wheels, redesigned side sills, a honeycomb grille, and a modified rear bumper. These elements distinguish it from the standard ID.3 Neo.

Range and pricing

Despite the performance upgrades, the ID.3 GTI’s battery capacity remains at 79 kWh. The vehicle is rated for a range of 373 miles on a full charge, only 18 miles less than the standard model. Peak charging power is 183 kW.

Production of the ID.3 GTI is set to begin in spring 2027. Volkswagen has not yet released pricing information.
