Sedans rebound as Honda and Toyota lead U.S. sales growth - sedans rebound
Toyota and Honda led U.S. sedan sales growth in 2026 with models like the Camry and Civic gaining market share.

The sedan’s decline has been exaggerated. After years of being overshadowed by SUVs and trucks, traditional passenger cars are making a comeback in the U.S. market, with Honda and Toyota taking the lead in 2026. Sales figures for the first nine months of the year reveal passenger cars gaining market share, thanks to lower prices, improved fuel efficiency, and the practicality of smaller vehicles without the extra bulk of larger models.

Toyota and Honda Drive the Comeback

Toyota’s Camry sales climbed 11.2% to 260,684 units, while Honda’s Accord saw an even stronger rise of 32.7% to 145,520 vehicles. Compact sedans also performed strongly: the Toyota Corolla increased 8.4% to 195,141 sales, and the Honda Civic grew 5.4% to 195,135 units.

Other manufacturers are experiencing similar patterns. Hyundai’s Elantra, now in its final generation, still posted gains, while the Sonata and Kia K5 both recorded double-digit increases. Mazda’s Mazda3 also saw a significant rise, and even premium sedans like the BMW 3 Series, Lexus IS, and Acura Integra have shown year-over-year improvements. However, not every automaker is benefiting. Nissan’s passenger-car lineup has struggled, with the Sentra and outgoing Altima declining even as its SUV and truck sales strengthen.

Cost remains a critical factor. With new vehicle prices staying high, sedans provide better value. A Honda Civic or Accord can begin under $30,000, while comparable compact SUVs often cost thousands more. Fuel efficiency further enhances their appeal—hybrid versions of the Civic and Accord achieve over 48 miles per gallon combined, offering a cost-effective alternative to fully electric vehicles.

If this trend persists into 2027, automakers that kept sedan production lines active may find themselves in a stronger market position as demand for these vehicles stabilizes.
