Leapmotor hatchback nears Chinese launch
Leapmotor is preparing to launch the B03, a B‑segment electric hatchback that will be marketed globally under a new name. The model, essentially a rebranded version of the company’s domestic A05, is set to begin bookings in China ahead of its official debut on August 10.

New name, same platform
The B03 replaces the A05 name as the automaker streamlines its naming scheme across international markets. The shift follows a similar move with the B03X SUV, which was previously known as the A10X in China. By using the “B” prefix, the company hopes to avoid confusion between its B‑segment hatchbacks and the smaller A‑segment cars.
Mechanically, the B03 mirrors the B03X but without the raised ride height and the black plastic wheel‑arch claddings that distinguish the SUV. Both versions will be offered with single‑motor front‑wheel‑drive powertrains.

Powertrains and range
The base version produces 95 PS (70 kW) and is rated for a 405 km range under the CLTC testing cycle. A higher‑trim variant delivers 122 PS (90 kW) and a claimed 510 km CLTC range. Those figures translate to roughly 330 km and 420 km, respectively, when measured under the stricter WLTP standard.
Both models share the same battery options as the B03X: a 39.8 kWh and a 53 kWh lithium‑iron‑phosphate pack. The modest battery sizes keep the vehicle’s weight low, which should help maintain the advertised efficiency.
In comparison with other recent B‑segment EVs, the B03’s projected WLTP range sits near the middle of the segment, offering a compromise between cost and mileage. Its battery capacity is smaller than many competitors, which could limit long‑distance appeal but may also keep the price competitive.
Interior and technology
The cabin design is largely carried over from the B03X. It features pill‑shaped details, tubular centre air‑conditioning vents, an 8.88‑inch instrument cluster, and a 14.6‑inch infotainment touchscreen. A small robot mascot appears in several spots, adding a playful touch to the interior.

Practical touches include a dash‑mounted accessory attachment, a front passenger seat that folds flat to serve as a table, and storage space beneath the rear seats. Level‑2 driver assistance and park‑assist systems are standard on all trims except the base model; only the top‑end variants receive lidar and advanced autonomous‑driving capabilities.
Potential export path
Leapmotor has already penciled the B03X for a launch in Malaysia, suggesting the hatchback could follow a similar export timeline. Its similarity to the SUV may simplify homologation processes in foreign markets, allowing the vehicle to reach overseas buyers sooner than anticipated.
Analysts note that the modest price point and compact size could make it attractive in regions where urban congestion and stricter emissions rules are driving demand for small electric cars.
Overall, the B03 appears positioned as an affordable entry into the global B‑segment EV market. While range figures under WLTP are modest, the vehicle’s battery size and technology suite align with the automaker’s strategy of offering low‑cost electric mobility without sacrificing essential features.
